RITTech, what is it and why is it important?

RITTech is an industry wide recognised standard for people working across IT which demonstrates the holder is considered knowledgeable, professional and competent. It is not a course or an exam that can be studied for, it is a validation of existing skills, knowledge and acknowledges your commitment to maintaining and developing that competence in the future, which is validated every five years.

These standards are important and are considered normal in other sectors, however the IT industry has not yet developed the maturity and rigour of other professions. Consider insurance, engineering, accountancy, medicine, each one has their own professional body where it is expected and a key milestone in people’s careers, but in IT, there is no expectation to validate your skills or commitment to maintain and develop those skills.

Being able to formally evidence technical competence and professional integrity is an easy way to stand out from the crowd. That isn't to say that the majority of IT practitioners are incompetent or unprofessional, but rather that organisations tend to apply their own in-house standards. These standards are inconsistent with no role requiring the same competence. When looking at requirements for a Service Desk Technician the differing levels of what is required at different companies is vast. Some company expect a first line Service Desk Technician to log tickets, and carry out basic troubleshooting whilst others expect their front line support to be able to handle switch configuration, network troubleshooting, security best practice advice, the list is endless.

By benchmarking everyone against one standard this gives a consistent measure of minimum competency as well as agreeing to continue to develop and uphold professional standards of conduct.
